So excited and humbled to be back playing Newport Folk Festival this year!
“Tift has an uncommonly infectious spirit and deep soul. When I play music with her she lifts me up and reminds me to be present. Tift also reminds us that folk music isn’t about acoustic guitars and fiddles (though those happen to be at arm’s reach). It’s about connecting with your fellow human. This is why I’m happy to introduce Tift Merritt to the 2013 Newport Folk Line-up.”

Tift Merritt & Anna Schuleit collaborating live at 92YTribeca on January 26th, tickets:
http://www.92y.org/Tribeca/Event/Tift-Merritt-with-painter-Anna.aspx
When I met painter visual artist Anna Schuleit, I was looking at her paintings and I could not find the bottom of them. They were so emotional, and reminded me of my favorite painter Cy Twombly. When I met Anna herself, she was so open and giving and beautiful. I felt like I had met a kindred spirit, someone who inspired me, a better version of who I wanted to be. We talked for hours and hours and naturally, I wanted to find a way to combine the way we see the world.
I’ve always been fascinated by how creating in any medium is a kind of private performance – a parallel intensity of mind. While I wrote Traveling Alone, stops by Anna’s studio were a refuge of color and calm. Anna came to the studio to peer into our world, too. To see what the emotional journey within an album like Traveling Alone would look if Anna painted it is fascinating to me, and I think sound is fascinating to her. We speak different languages and are drawn toward that language we can’t speak fluently in order to translate ourselves. Performing together seemed like an amazingly tangible and sensitive way to entangle ourselves.
Tift will be performing alongside painter Anna Schuleit at 92YTribeca on January 26th for an event that combines Anna’s art with Tift’s music. Tickets go on sale this Friday, head HERE for more information about the event.
